When I started B Marketing, I didn’t have a clear roadmap—I just had a vision, a whole lot of passion, and a determination to make an impact. Now, here we are, five years and over 40 businesses and non-profit organizations later. Through every challenge, every win, and every late-night brainstorming session, I’ve learned many lessons about running a business (and keeping your sanity intact). If you’re in the trenches of entrepreneurship, this one’s for you.
In honor of B Marketing’s 5th anniversary, I’m sharing five lessons I’ve learned as an entrepreneur—because, let’s be real, running a business is not for the faint of heart.
1. Don’t Take Everything So Seriously
A couple of years ago, I rebranded B Marketing to what you see today, and the biggest inspiration behind that shift? Learning to embrace the fun, excitement, and enthusiasm that fuels me every day. Business is important, but if you’re constantly in a stress spiral, you’re going to burn out fast. Give yourself permission to laugh, play, and enjoy the process—because why did we start this whole thing if not to love what we do?
2. Ignore the Noise
There will always be people who are ahead of you, people who doubt you, and people who have many opinions about what you should or shouldn’t be doing (and we know what they say about opinions). The key? Block. It. Out. Stay in your lane and focus on what you’re called to do. No one else is on your exact journey, and no one else can do what you do the way you do it.
3. Be Grateful in Feast + Famine
Social media makes it look like success is one big, seamless glow-up. But behind the scenes? There’s blood, sweat, tears, and a whole lot of trial and error. Some months are thriving, others are tight. But I’ve learned to be grateful through it all—because every experience, good or bad, is part of the journey. Growth isn’t just in the wins; it’s in the resilience to keep going when things get tough.
4. Surround Yourself with Trusted Mentors
You don’t have to do this alone. Finding mentors—whether they’re in your industry, part of a business network, or someone you admire—can make all the difference. Trusted mentors offer guidance, help you see blind spots, and remind you that you’re not navigating this crazy business world by yourself. Lean into those relationships; they’ll help you grow in ways you never expected.
5. Be Yourself
Out of 8 billion people in this world, there is only one you. That means no one else can bring what you bring to the table. Don’t let anyone dull your shine, hide your talent, or make you feel small. Take up as much space as you need. Because at the end of the day, people won’t remember what you did as much as how you made them feel. Show up as you—loudly, proudly, and unapologetically.
So, here’s to five years of growth, grit, and gratitude—and to many more ahead. If you’re in the trenches of building your own business, know this: You’re doing amazing work. Keep going, keep believing, and keep showing up as your incredible self.
