Why Hiding Your Prices Is Costing You Clients

Have you ever clicked on a service page, excited to learn more only to find zero pricing info? It's frustrating, right? Or maybe you've wanted to work with someone but had to jump through a million hoops just to find a guestimate for their services.

I get it. Money talk can feel awkward. But here's the thing: I'm unapologetically pro-price transparency, and I think it's time we had an honest conversation about why that matters for clients and businesses.

The Elephant in the Room: Why Businesses Avoid Sharing Prices

Before diving in, let's address why so many service-based businesses treat their pricing like classified information. The fears are real:

  • "What if I scare people away?" Some people worry that putting prices out there will send potential clients running for the hills before they understand the value.

  • "But my services are custom!"  True, many service-based businesses offer tailored solutions that don't fit neatly into a one-size-fits-all price tag.

  • "I don't want competitors to know my rates."  The fear of being undercut or having someone copy your pricing structure is legitimate.

  • "What if I undervalue myself?"  Some worry that showing prices might make their services seem less premium or too exclusive.

Here's the reality check: while some industries or highly specialized services might have valid reasons for keeping pricing under wraps, most service-based businesses actually benefit way more from being upfront about their investment levels.

Price Transparency = Time Saved (for Everyone)

I believe being honest about pricing is an act of respect. When you're transparent about what working with you costs, you're essentially saying, "I value your time, and I'm confident enough in what I offer to be upfront about it."

Clear pricing helps your ideal clients self-select. They can look at your services, check their budget, and decide if it's worth having that conversation. No one's time gets wasted on discovery calls where the budget is wildly off, and you avoid those awkward sticker shock moments.

When you signal confidence in your value by being transparent about pricing, you're starting the relationship on the right foot. Your clients know what to expect, and you've shown them you're straightforward and trustworthy.

But What If Your Pricing Isn't One-Size-Fits-All?

Totally fair question. Not every service fits neatly into a package with a flat fee, and that’s okay. But that doesn’t mean you have to leave people guessing. There are plenty of ways to be transparent without boxing yourself in:

  • Exact Pricing If you offer set services with defined scope, go ahead and list the price. It removes the guesswork and helps people make a faster decision.

  • Budget Ranges Add a spot on your intake or contact form for someone to select an idea budget range. It sets expectations early and lets you tailor your recommendations accordingly.

  • "Starting at" Pricing Phrases like “Consulting sessions start at $150” or “Packages from $1,200+” give people a helpful baseline even if the final cost depends on their needs.

  • Package Examples Put together some popular service combinations to show what different budget levels might look like. This is especially helpful for clients who are new to your industry and genuinely have no clue what things should cost.

  • Transparent Proposals When custom quotes are necessary, make them crystal clear. Break down the scope, pricing, and deliverables so clients know exactly what they’re getting. It builds trust and keeps everyone on the same page.

And if the budget isn’t aligned? That’s okay too. Saying “this might not be the right fit” is respectful, not rude. You’re running a business, and clarity is a kindness to everyone involved.
